Message from the Principal....

As we approach the new year, I would like to take a few words to express my thanks to the Saint Joseph School Community.

The last six months of my professional and personal life has been greatly enriched and blessed by becoming part of this great organization.  I am totally overwhelmed by your support, positive attitude, and generosity.  I have never experienced this level of enthusiasm and devotion to the education of children.

Dear Parent/Guardian:

We hope you, and your family, are having a healthy start to the New Year. Below you will find a few reminders from the health office which will help us in our efforts to keep the students of Saint Joseph School healthy.

     • Please call the main office to report a student’s absence and the reason for the absence. Tracking illnesses provides beneficial information for the health office.

     • In the event that a student is absent due to illness that includes fever or vomiting, please note that students can not return to school until they are fever free without medication and have not vomited for 24 hours.

     • Due to the number of students with food related allergies, please do not send in food for common consumption to the classroom or cafeteria.

If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact the health office at 781-396-2779. We appreciate your assistance in these matters.

Sincerely,
Jessica Kerr, RN
Marianne Hodgdon, LPN

FEVERS
Please note that children must be fever free for 24 hours without medication before they can return to school. If a child is dismissed with a fever or reported absent with a fever they will not be allowed to return to school the next day. Thank you for your cooperation. We appreciate your help keeping our school healthy!

MEDICATIONS Students are not allowed to carry any medications, prescription or over the counter medications (ie: Tylenol/Motrin, allergy/cough/cold meds, homeopathic remedies), in the school building.  Please administer prescription and over the counter medications before or after school.  If that is not possible, medication can be administered in the school health office if the student’s physician writes a specific order and the medication is delivered by a parent/guardian in its original container.

Dear Parents,

Food allergies are on the rise and can cause a severe, potentially fatal allergic reaction called anaphylaxis for allergic individuals. There are a number of common food allergens. Peanuts and tree nuts account for the most fatal or near fatal anaphylactic reactions. To help make our school a fun and safe place for our increasing number of peanut and tree nut allergic students we will not be serving or selling any products containing nuts or manufactured with nuts. We also ask that you do not send any food into the school/classroom for common consumption that contains nuts or is manufactured with nuts. Please note that these food guidelines DO NOT apply to daily snacks and lunches sent to school by parents for their own children. They also do not apply to curriculum events and after school events with parents in attendance.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact the school health office at
781-396-2779. Thank you for you cooperation.

Sincerely,

Jessica Kerr, RN
Marianne Hodgdon, LPN

Message from the Principal....

Kindergarten Philosophy of Saint Joseph School

All children are entitled to a meaningful and comprehensive education rich in intellectual and moral experiences in hopes of developing productive, young contributing Christian citizens for our society.

In the education of young children the school strives to provide

  • A meaningful introduction to the formal school experience
  • A sensitive and evenly paced transition from preschool and home experiences
  • Multiple opportunities to socialize through play and group activities
  • Lessons involving the arts including music, dramatic play, drawing and paint
  • A solid basis in pre reading, writing, and mathematical concepts
  • Beginning discussions and experiences dealing with Catholic principles and practices

In order to focus our goals and practices we refer to the National Association of Young children Guidelines for Developmental Kindergarten practice:

  1. The curriculum has an articulated description of its theoretical base that is consistent with prevailing professional opinion and research on how children learn.
  2. Curriculum content is designed to achieve long-range goals for children in all domains-social, emotional, cognitive, and physical-and to prepare children to function as fully contributing members of a democratic society.
  3. Curriculum addresses a broad range of content that is relevant, engaging, and meaningful to children.
  4. Curriculum goals are realistic and attainable for most children in the designated age range for which they were designed.
  5. Curriculum content reflects and is generated by the needs and interests of individual children within the group.  Curriculum incorporates a wide variety of learning experiences, materials and equipment, and instructional strategies to accommodate a broad range of children’s individual differences in prior experience, maturation rates, styles of learning, needs and interests.
  6. Curriculum respects and supports individual, cultural, and linguistic diversity. Curriculum supports and encourages positive relationships with children’s families.
  7. Curriculum builds upon what children already know and are able to do (activating prior knowledge) to consolidate their learning and to foster their acquisition of new concepts and skills.
  8. The content of the curriculum is worth knowing; curriculum respects children’s intelligence and does not waste their time.
  9. Curriculum engages children actively, not passively, in the learning process. Children have opportunities to make meaningful choices.
  10. Curriculum values children’s constructive errors and does not prematurely limit exploration and experimentation for sake of ensuring “right” answers.
  11. Curriculum emphasizes the development of children’s thinking, reasoning, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.
  12. Curriculum is supportive of children’s physiological needs for activity, sensory stimulation, fresh air, rest, hygiene, and nourishment/elimination.
  13. Curriculum protects children’s psychological safety, that is, children feel happy, relaxed, and comfortable rather than disengaged, frightened, worried, or stressed.
  14. The curriculum is flexible so teachers can adapt to individual children or groups

Message from the Principal....

Dear parents/guardians of our wonderful preschoolers,

It is amazing to me that Thanksgiving is already upon us.  My four months at St. Joseph’s had been very busy, but equally rewarding.  I especially love seeing our younger children develop in their learning situation.  I am writing to give you some initial information about our kindergarten program.  We have two wonderful and experienced kindergarten teachers.  This year we added full time teacher assistants.  Therefore, there are always at least two adults with the children.  Also, teaching the class are specialists in art, music, technology, and physical education.  This year we are revising part of our developmental program to have a more pronounced hands-on component.  We have purchased a great deal of new materials to address this goal.  You will find the program to be extremely rich in pre grade one skills in reading, handwriting, and mathematics.  Because there seems to be quite a bit of interest in our kindergarten this year,  we are inviting parents to two drop in visitations on December 2nd and 9th from 8:15 - 9:30 AM.  Come visit our kindergarten sessions, have a cup of coffee, and find out what we have to offer.  Other times will be accommodated.  If you would like to save a seat in any case, please return the enclosed intention sheet.  After the holidays, we shall send confirmation information.  We shall also be hosting families and our preschoolers during Catholic Schools Week.  Pre-Registration Form

Hope to see you soon,

Jim Deveney, Principal
