GRADE FIVE NEWSLast winter students in grade 5 learned about radiant energy and sun safety. As a culminating activity, they entered the national SunWise with Shade Poster Contest in which they created posters using five SunWise tips to help spread awareness, about skin cancer and protection from the sun. Judging included originality, creativity, and quality of artwork. The competition began at the state level. I am so very proud to announce that three grade 5 students swept the top three places in Massachusetts.

Congratulations to Aoife Kilbride – grade 5B who won first place and received a digital camera for her poster, “Spare Yourself from the Sun, Strike out Skin Canter!” She now advances to the national contest and is now waiting your vote. You could help her become the national winner. Go to wwww.shadefoundation.org/ to vote. Congratulations also go to the runners up: Shauna Lynch for “Slot Machine” and Kayley Jefferson for “Sorry”!

Candy Drive

SAINT JOSEPH SCHOOL ANNUAL CANDY DRIVE

Our annual candy drive will begin on Friday, April 27th! We will kick it off with an assembly and boxes of candy will be distributed to your child at the end of the day. If you have more than one child in the school the candy will be distributed to the oldest child. We ask that each family sell at least one box of candy. Each bar is $2. Once you sell one box, please return the $60.00 in an envelope with your child’s name and classroom on the envelope. No money will be accepted unless it is returned in a clearly marked envelope (this will prevent any confusion). Once you have turned in all your money for your box of candy, you may request another box by sending a note in with your child. Our goal as a school is to sell 500 boxes of candy. This will be super easy if everyone does their part! Also, if we reach our school goal of 500 boxes, MR. DEVENEY WILL KISS A LIVE PIG!!! The top selling student will have their picture taken with Mr. Deveney and the Pig!

Dress Down Day!

To show support for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, you must come dressed in lime green or orange.

Those are the colors that represent these specific cancers.

All money will be donated to Pennies for Patients and will count towards your classroom goal for the party of your choice. Remember, only one classroom can win that prize, so gather your change and bring it in! The winner will be announced on Monday, April 2, 2012.

St. Joseph School takes on another academic endeavor

Quiz Show	On January 28, St. Joseph School seventh and eighth graders joined thirteen other middle schools in the region as first time participants in Quiz Bowl , a middle school academic jeopardy competition. Students were asked to prepare for questions in five academic categories and five special categories. The academic categories were Cell Biology, Poetry, Math Vocabulary , History of Islam, Greek Mythology , the 2012 Primaries, Caucuses and Conventions. view full size slideshow

The special topics were 100th year celebrations of Fenway Park, The Sinking of the Titanic, birth of abstract artist Jackson Pollack, the Girl Scouts and the Republic of China.

Representing St. Joseph School were eighth graders Cameron Doyle, Michael Welton, Ryan Arbuckle, Shannon McGurty , Jennifer Ong and Edward Tan. Seventh grade students were Evan Marks, Olivia Marks, Jack Albanese. Sharice Nazaire , Liam Shaughnessy, Albert Cangiano, Andrew Murphy , John Corbett , Patrick Kelly , and George Bailey.
