In yet another barn-burner, St. Joe’s (9-3) pulled out their fourth come-from-behind victory against a tough Chevrus School (5-8) to remain amongst the leaders of the Middlesex Catholic Elementary School League. The regular season comes to a close this weekend with a 12:15 PM game Saturday at Pope John High School, Everett against St. Anthony (8-4), and a game Sunday at 4:15 PM versus St. Joseph of Wakefield at Northeast Vocational School. The playoffs are slated to begin on February 13th at Malden Catholic High School. |
St. Joseph 34, Chevrus School 29
With it very obvious early in the game that the Chevrus School had every intention of pulling off the upset, St. Joe’s managed a sensational comeback to hold on in a highly entertaining, seat-squirming victory. The game was a back and forth affair in the first half with Chevrus using their height advantage to control the offensive boards and get countless second and third chance baskets. However, sparkplug Cameron Doyle (season-high 6 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists), center Jack Albanese (5 points, 3 rebounds) and forward Patrick Kelly (5 points, 2 assists, 2 blocks) kept St. Joe’s alive with their rugged inside presence.
Early in the second half, Chevrus stretched their lead to 20-12 before St. Joe’s responded with a nine point spurt to jump ahead 21-20. Leading the charge were center Michael Doyle (season-high 7 rebounds), sharpshooter Shawn Maloney (11 points, 4 steals) and standout guard Gianfranco Colella (2 points, 3 steals, 5 assists). Tension mounted as both teams hit spectacular shots against tremendous defensive pressure. Team leader Sebastian Allien (5 points, 4 steals, 6 assists) and player-of-the-game Maloney produced one clutch shot after another, but St. Joe’s still trailed 29-28 with less than two minutes left. With both teams utilizing a full court press, St. Joe’s managed several key steals accompanied by pin-point unselfish passing to surge ahead and seal the win.
