BOYS JUNIOR TEAM (5th/6th grade)
St. Joe’s handed St. Mary’s of Melrose (6-2) their second loss of the season in a grueling and highly entertaining back-and-forth slugfest. The hard-earned victory improves St. Joe’s record to 8-2 and keeps them amongst the leaders of the Middlesex Catholic Elementary School League.

The tone was set right from the start with both teams employing a fierce man-to-man defense. St. Joe’s jumped out to a quick lead behind the frontcourt presence of center Jack Albanese (7 points, 3 rebounds) and swingman Patrick Kelly (6 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals). After St. Mary’s rallied to take the lead early in the second half, standout guards Gianfranco Colella (3 assists, 3 steals), Shawn Maloney (3 assists, 2 rebounds, 2 steals) and Cameron Doyle (5 points, 3 rebounds) led St. Joe’s to an 8-point run with some pinpoint passing and a series of slashing drives to the basket. Also providing a key spark were center Patrick Hurley (2 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals), power forward Michael Doyle (2 points, 4 rebounds) and guard Michael Frongillo (2 points, 2 steals). Not to be overlooked were Andrew Murphy, Evan Marks and Jeffrey Wang, who were outstanding defensively during the key, game-clinching St. Joe’s rally. Next up is an important grudge match with Immaculate Conception of Revere (8-1) on Thursday, January 21 at 4:30 PM. The game has all the makings of a real barn burner.
