Basketball News from the Girls’ School and CYO Teams7/8th Grade Teams, January 7-10, 2010:
WIN - The St. Joseph Girls’ Basketball team began their weekend play this past Thursday when the school team achieved a resounding win against St. Joseph School of Wakefield. The final score was 38-11 with points coming from a variety of players. Top scorer was Sarah Donnelly with 10 points, followed by Courtney Erickson’s 8. Tessa McLaughlin, Emily Patturelli and Kayla Harris all contributed 4 points each.
WIN - On Friday, the School team continued their winning streak with a 47-28 victory against St. Anthony’s of Everett. This physical game didn’t keep the St. Joe’s girls from scoring big, with Tessa McLaughlin putting up 18 points and Courtney Erickson dominating the boards for rebounds and putting up 13 points. Other contributors to the score were: Kayla Harris, Julie Dunn, Kati Raver, Emily Patturelli and Clare Doncaster.
WIN - The CYO team rounded out the weekend on Sunday with an extremely competitive and physical game against St. Adelaide’s of Peabody. The final score was 30-22 with Tessa McLaughlin making 16, Sarah Donnelly making 7 and Alyssa McLellan putting in 6. Olivia Zizza was instrumental in rebounding and defensive steals, while Alison Shanahan used her height to take back the ball at the boards and Emily Patturelli got aggressive on D. Speedy recovery is wished for Courtney Erickson, nursing a knee injury.

5-6th Grade Teams – January 7-10, 2010
WIN – The weekend began for the School team with a 31-2 win against St. Anthony’s of Everett. Every player on the team scored points: Leah Harris, Dani Deltorto, Gillian Drane, Sam Calautti, Melissa Ramao, Emily Ramao, Ani Castagnetti, Claudia Curro, Shannon McGurty and Christina McLellan.
LOSS – This past Friday, the School team experienced their first loss of the season in a heartbreaking final moment against St. Joseph of Wakefield. The 8-7 loss came in the last second of the hard-fought game when a Wakefield player put up a “Hail Mary” shot from almost mid-court to sink the winning points. Our team’s top scoring players were: Gillian Drane with 4 points and Leah Harris with 3.
WIN – After their difficult game on Friday night, all School players rallied the next morning and came back with a strong win against St. Patrick’s of Stoneham, winning 32-2. Every player on the team scored.
WIN - On Sunday, the CYO Bantams played Our Lady of Assumption, Wakefield with a decisive game ending score of 25 to 13. Danielle Deltorto had a great game and was the top scorer with 8 points, while Melissa Ramano controlled the boards and scored 5 points (she was also fouled 10 times.) Kylie McGaffigan received her highest score of the season with 4 points and Samantha Calautti, our only 5th grader, put up 4 points as well. Point guard Christina Mclellan made 3 points despite being fouled 4 times and Gillian Drane scored an important basket in the game despite also being fouled 4 times. Our most aggressive defender was Talia Matarazza who took 5 fouls for the team while keeping the challengers at bay.
